A Natural Approach to Rearing Koi and Coarse Carp

At our farm, we use time-honoured, natural methods to raise both Koi for private individuals and Coarse Carp for fisheries. Our approach focuses on building strong, healthy fish through sustainable practices and carefully managed pond ecosystems.

Seasonal Pond Management

Every October, we begin harvest season by fully draining down our ponds. They are left to dry out over winter and then limed in spring. This process sterilises and fertilises the pond bed, preparing it for the new season.

This kickstarts a natural cycle of food production. Microscopic live foods like daphnia thrive in this environment, providing essential nutrition for fry in the spring. The process also encourages plant growth, which breaks down naturally as carp stir the pond bed, reducing light penetration and slowing photosynthesis.

Natural Filtration Systems

We use swan mussels and aquatic plants as part of a natural filtration system. Mussels help clean the water by sifting through silt on the pond floor, maintaining balance and clarity without the need for artificial filtration.

Natural Spawning for Stronger Fry

Our fish are allowed to spawn naturally, without any artificial intervention. This leads to more mature eggs, lower deformity rates, and stronger fry. We believe that letting nature take its course results in healthier, more resilient fish.

Coarse Carp for Fisheries

Our Coarse Carp are seasoned and hardy, well-suited to life in commercial fisheries. Raised in open conditions and exposed to natural diseases and varying weather, they develop robust immune systems. These are fish that can handle being caught and survive through winter, making them ideal working stock for fisheries across the UK.

Premium Koi for Individuals

We raise our Koi with care and attention to both health and aesthetics. Natural filtration, clean water, and a nutrient-rich environment help produce vibrant, high-quality Koi for private buyers who appreciate beauty and strength in equal measure.

Naturally Inspired Nutrition

In the early stages, fry are fed on live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia, mimicking what they would hunt in the wild. This supports their natural development and encourages active feeding behaviours.

All our feed is made fresh using only natural ingredients, with no preservatives or additives. Much of it comes directly from our farm, including mussels, bees, and chickens, ensuring complete traceability and top nutritional quality.

Oxygen-Rich Environments

To support healthy growth, we ensure all ponds are open and free from surrounding tree cover, which allows for optimal oxygen exchange. Water is also dropped into tanks from height via filtration systems, replicating the effect of flowing water and maximising oxygen levels.
