Carex pendula – Pendulous Sedge

Carex pendula, commonly known as Pendulous Sedge, is a graceful and architectural grass-like perennial ideal for damp, shaded areas and pond margins. Known for its elegant, arching green foliage and drooping flower spikes, this native sedge brings texture, movement, and a naturalistic feel to gardens and water features.

Reaching heights of 100–150cm, Pendulous Sedge produces long, nodding flower stems from late spring to early summer, followed by decorative seed heads that add interest into autumn. It forms large clumps over time, making it excellent for ground cover, erosion control, and wildlife-friendly planting.

Tolerant of a wide range of conditions, it prefers moist or boggy soils but can adapt to drier ground once established. It’s fully hardy and low-maintenance, making it a reliable and attractive choice for both formal and natural pond edges.
