Darmera peltata – Umbrella Plant

Darmera peltata, commonly known as the Umbrella Plant, is a bold and architectural perennial perfect for damp borders, stream edges, and pond margins. Native to North America, this striking plant is admired for its large, rounded, umbrella-like leaves that can reach up to 60cm across, creating a dramatic, tropical appearance in shady or partially sunny spots.

In spring, before the foliage emerges, clusters of soft pink star-shaped flowers rise on tall stems, adding early colour and interest. As the season progresses, the huge foliage takes centre stage, offering lush, textural greenery that turns bronze-red in autumn for added seasonal appeal.

Ideal for moist or boggy soil, Darmera peltata is fully hardy and thrives in wildlife-friendly and naturalistic planting schemes, especially near water.
